Visiting Ganvié: the lake city of Lake Nokoué
Built on stilts in the heart of Lake Nokoué, Ganvié is one of Africa's largest lake cities: more than 20,000 people live here from fishing, entirely on the water. The visit is by pirogue from the Abomey-Calavi jetty, about thirty minutes from Cotonou.
A story of refuge
In the 17th century, the Tofinu people settled in the middle of the lake to escape the slave raids of the Dahomey kingdom, whose warriors could not fight on water. Ganvié — “the community of those who found peace” — was born of this resistance.
