History

A village born of resistance

In the 17th century, the Tofinu people fled the kings of Dahomey — slavers who, according to their beliefs, could not cross water. The Tofinu then built an entire village in the middle of Lake Nokoué, out of reach. The name "Ganvié" literally means "we survived".

Today, Ganvié remains permanently inhabited. Children go to school by pirogue, the market floats, fishermen weave their "acadja" (bamboo fish traps) — an ancestral way of life that endures. UNESCO has added Ganvié to its indicative World Heritage list.
