History
A crossroads of history and spirituality
Founded in the 16th century, Ouidah became one of West Africa's major slaving ports. Over a million Africans were shipped from here to the Americas, notably Brazil and Haiti — the origin of intense cultural exchanges between Bénin and the Americas.
Ouidah is also the spiritual capital of Vodun, an ancestral cult practised in Bénin and made official religion in 1996. The Python Temple, just metres from the Catholic basilica, symbolises the country's religious syncretism.
On January 10, the town celebrates the National Vodun Festival — a major cultural event drawing visitors and practitioners from around the world.
