History
From a former slave port to a peaceful haven
Grand-Popo (local name: Hula-Gbé) was, like Ouidah, a major slaving port in the 18th century, with a Portuguese fort of which vestiges remain. The decline of the trade and the silting of the port progressively transformed the town into a fishing village.
Since the 2000s, a new coastal life has emerged: eco-lodges built from local materials, pirogue tours on the lagoon, migratory bird watching at the Bouche du Roy — an exceptional Ramsar-listed site.
