Cotonou

The vibrant gateway

Economic capital · Urban life

Cotonou isn't Bénin's political capital (that's Porto-Novo) but it's the beating heart. 1.5 million inhabitants, a strategic port, Dantokpa Market (the largest in West Africa), the incredible Zinsou Foundation of contemporary art, a vibrant music and food scene. The city the diaspora reunites with emotion upon landing.

History

From fishing village to metropolis

A small fishing village until the 19th century, Cotonou (Kutɔnu, "mouth of the river of death" in Fon) owes its rise to the construction of the port and railway during French colonisation. After independence (1960), it quickly became Bénin's economic capital and urban showcase.

Today, Cotonou concentrates universities, institutions, major companies and a booming cultural scene. Wa-Ru, contemporary urban art, thrives here. The Zinsou Foundation has been exhibiting Africa's greatest living artists since 2005.
