Abomey

Palaces of the Dahomey Kings

UNESCO World Heritage

Former capital of the Kingdom of Dahomey (17th to late 19th century), Abomey preserves the royal palaces of 12 successive kings. Inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1985, this unique complex tells the story of one of West Africa's most powerful kingdoms — and its formidable female warriors, the Amazons.

History

The story of Kings and Amazons

Founded around 1625 by King Houegbadja, the Kingdom of Dahomey expanded rapidly thanks to a disciplined army that included — unique in Africa — an elite female corps: the Mino ("our mothers"), whom Europeans called the "Amazons of Dahomey". Selected young and trained for life, these warriors terrified enemy armies.

At its peak under Kings Ghezo (1818-1858) and Glélé (1858-1889), the kingdom dominated the regional slave trade — a dark chapter Bénin owns today through its memorial circuits.

The Abomey palaces, decorated with clay bas-reliefs depicting great battles and royal symbols, survived colonial wars thanks to Vodun priests who safeguarded them. The historical museum preserves thrones, sabres, royal calabashes and ritual objects.
